Chapter 32

MARIA walked around the breakfast bar and joined me at the sofa. I was usually quick at thinking fast on my feet, but this time I needed to sit and to gather my thoughts. I turned to face her and reached for her hand, but she snatched it way.

“Look, you have to trust me.”

“Trust you! I think I’ve already done that. I need an explanation or you can leave right now. To think I was going to have you babysit.”

“Wait, it’s difficult. I’m on official army business here. You can understand that. That’s why I don’t want the police noseying around me.”

“I understand that, but what of that guy rapes and murders someone again? I couldn’t have that on my conscience. Could you?”

My backside shuffled on the cushion. It was an uncomfortable question to answer if it wasn’t that I knew the truth that he was dead. But how to explain that caused a brain fart.

“L… Listen, if it is him, I saved you from a fate worse than death.”

“That doesn’t cut it. I have to do the right thing.”

I let out a sigh.

“Okay, then I’ll collect my ruck and I’m outta here. Just give the police a description of me that’s opposite to the way I look. You can do that, right?”

Maria looked me straight in the eye. Her mind was clearly churning over me leaving. I detected moistness in her eyes.

“What if they come to my work and speak to my boss? Hell, if my boss sees his picture, he could phone them. He knows what you look like. I can’t lie. I don’t have it in me.”

The situation was as much of a bind as the one back at Fort Bragg. She was right. I could picture the events. Her boss gives my description and puts Fat Guy and me at the diner, arguing. Granger sees his statement and ties me to his stop and search nearby, where he noticed my cut knuckles. If they find the body near to his stop and search, with the guy’s mashed face, then that would be me toast. Then if Maria had given a false description, she could be implicated in his death, or at least be considered as preventing the course of justice. Sure, I could argue self-defense, but then I thought, would I be locked up while they argued if they should charge or not? It wasn’t just that. Sure, Maria was a victim, but if they somehow could make some sort of charge against her, what would happen to her kids? The thought of Roberto ending up in an orphanage had me gulping. I took a deep breath.

“The guy’s dead. It was an accident.”

“What! How?”

She sidled away from me along the sofa. I sat on my hands in hope she wouldn’t see me as threatening.

“After you got on the bus, he pulled a knife on me. We struggled. Fell to the ground. He still had the knife in his hand and it stuck into him.”

“Oh my, God.
